Position Summary

The Professional Practice portfolio provides input and assurance to APEGA’s CEO and Registrar, as well as Council, that APEGA's licensed professionals and permit holders understand and meet the professional expectations as set out in the Engineering and Geoscience Professions (EGP) Act, the General Regulation, and APEGA’s Practice Standards and Guidelines.

APEGA’s Professional Practice Advisors assure that a high quality of ethical and professional practice is maintained across the professions through administration of the following core functions:

  • Practice Standards and Guidelines development and refinement
  • Individual and permit holder practice reviews
  • Licensure administration for changes in practice status applications

The Professional Practice Review Advisor is part of a growing team that reports to the Professional Practice Review Manager as part of the Professional Practice team. The Professional Practice Review Advisor assures that a high quality of ethical and professional practice is maintained across the professions through support to the Professional Practice Review Manager for the following core functions:

  • Planning of and conducting permit holder practice reviews
  • Participating in Practice Standards and Guidelines development and refinement 
  • Delivering regulatory professional development to APEGA licensed professionals, permit holders, and stakeholders

Responsibilities

  • Responsible and accountable to the Professional Practice Review Manager for:
    • Fulfilling the administration and operational demands of assigned permit holder practice reviews
    • Providing excellent customer service and timely responses as a "subject matter expert" to inquiries from staff, permit holders, professional members, and members of the public related to individual practice reviews and the collective practice of engineering and geoscience
    • Facilitating and reporting on specific practice reviews regarding permit holders
    • Provide support to the Professional Practice Review Manager as required
  • Support the Professional Practice Team and APEGA through:
    • Ensuring APEGA is a source of advice and information regarding the professional and ethical aspects of the practice of the engineering and geoscience professions
    • Applying knowledge of the Engineering and Geoscience Professions (EGP) Act, General Regulations, Bylaws, Standards, Guidelines and Bulletins, and other relevant acts, regulations, and codes when responding to stakeholders
    • Maintaining a professional and constructive attitude in dealing with members, volunteers, the public, and APEGA employees
    • Assisting in the development and implementation of policy, process, and procedures required to conduct permit holder practice reviews
    • Participating constructively and effectively in a team environment and with continuous improvement efforts
    • Working with the entire Professional Practice team to lead and facilitate process improvements within APEGA
    • Work closely and coordinate with relevant departments within APEGA
    • Represent APEGA at stakeholder and APEGA functions, as needed
  • As tasked, provide support to the Practice Review Board (PRB), the Practice Standards Committee (PSC), and subcommittees by:
    • Participating in the development and maintenance of professional practice standards, guidelines, and bulletins for the professions
    • Conducting research to support the goals and objectives of the PRB, PSC, and subcommittees
    • Assisting with the development and reporting of key process indicators
    • Preparing and managing practice review file for PRB recommendations and decisions, as per department policy, process, and procedures

Skills & Attributes

  • Thorough knowledge of EGP Act, Regulations and Bylaws
  • Knowledge of privacy requirements

  • Ability to motivate others through influence and an exceptional ability to partner and build consensus
  • Ability to apply sound judgment for appropriate escalation of matters to the Practice Review Manager and Director, Professional Practice

Qualifications

  • Professional engineer, geoscientist, or eligible for professional membership in APEGA with 20-25 years of progressive leadership experience in the delivery of engineering or geoscience services within an APEGA permit holder
    • 5-10 years' experience as an APEGA permit holder Responsible Member
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, and negotiating skills
  • Prior experience in a regulated industry, working as a regulator or in a government agency would be considered an asset 
  • Knowledge of regulatory processes and legislation is considered an asset
