APEGA Teacher Professional Development Program

APEGA recognizes that teachers are key in the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes crucial for our future professional engineers and geoscientists. We strive to provide training and resources to assist teachers in fostering a love of learning and creating real-world connections to curriculum.  

The APEGA Outreach team supports educators in connecting curriculum to engineering and geoscience by offering professional development conferences, sharing curriculum design resources, and delivering training sessions at teachers’ conventions and staff training sessions. 

APEGA Teacher PD Conference

APEGA is pleased to announce that we will be hosting Alberta teachers for a two-day, hands-on professional development conference in Edmonton on September 26 and 27, 2019. While we intend to offer professional development for primary and secondary teachers as well, this event will focus on Grades 1-6 teachers. 

This event offers teachers insight into our unique perspective on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, highlighting ways that engineering and geoscience connect to classroom learning outcomes. By the end of the conference, participants will have gained a new way of thinking about STEM education, a set of resources to incorporate into their classrooms, and the ability to implement the ideas presented. APEGA believes that experiential learning is key for all learners, so this event will be very collaborative and interactive.

Topics Covered During the Conference 

September 26-27, 2019

  • What is engineering? What is geoscience? 
  • Science and engineering demonstrations for the classroom 
  • Moonshot thinking 
  • STEM in stories and connecting curriculum to popular culture 
  • Taking activities to the next level: good to great! 

September 28, 2019 

The last day of the conference is optional and open only to educators registered in the previous days’ sessions.

The APEGA Outreach team will work with you (and your teaching partner or administrator, if desired) to directly apply the concepts learned in the previous two days. Participants will walk away with a fully designed lesson plan ready for immediate implementation!  

To allow a variety of schools and school boards to take part in this opportunity, we ask that each school register a maximum of four representatives. The deadline to register is September 19, 2019.
