Information on Becoming an APEGA Mentee

How You Can Benefit From Having a Mentor

There are many reasons to participate in a mentoring partnership, and most are related to your work-related learning and development.

Some areas for which a mentor can help you include:

  • insight into everyday work situations faced by senior professionals
  • improving work-related essential skills like communication, leadership, teamwork, and time management
  • encouragement and advice for job searches
  • career-path guidance
  • learning about Canadian workplace culture

Meeting with a mentor regularly gives you access to:

  • non-judgmental support from an experienced Professional Member
  • insights from your mentor's professional and personal experiences
  • chances to enhance your skills
  • attend learning and networking events
  • share resources with your mentor
  • the opportunity to help your mentor to learn from you (reverse mentoring)
  • up to 30 Continuing Professional Development hours for each year for being a mentee (informal category)

Note: APEGA mentors do not provide work supervision or references.

Who Can Become a Mentee

APEGA mentees come from all areas of engineering and geoscience. Examinees, Members-in-Training, and Professional Members are all welcome to join.

Do the following statements describe you?

  • I want to improve myself.
  • I would like advice from a Professional Member.
  • I am open and willing to share.
  • I am comfortable receiving constructive feedback.
  • I am patient.

If so, you could be an APEGA mentee!

What to Expect as a Mentee

When you sign up as a mentee, there is a non-refundable $50 fee for a one-year Mentoring Program registration.

After completing your registration, you must watch a series of orientation videos that will give you all of the information you will need to get the most out of the Mentoring Program.

Read about the orientation videos

Once you've watched the videos, you can search for a match based on criteria such as location, discipline, and or skills you want to learn. If you are not happy with your mentoring match, you can close that relationship and look for a new one.

Each mentoring partnership lasts about one year. During this time, you would typically meet in-person with your mentor twice per month and touch base over email or phone on non-meeting weeks. If you and your mentor are far apart from each other, you could even meet virtually through distance mentoring, using technology such as Facetime, Skype, or any other method that both you and your mentor are comfortable using.
