Discipline Committee Members

Committee members are needed for the Discipline Committee, which hears and decides on complaints of unskilled practice and unprofessional conduct against APEGA Members and Permit Holders that are brought before it by the Investigative Committee.

Qualifications

  • Be licensed as a Professional Member of APEGA – P.Eng., P.Geo, P.Geol., P.Geoph., P.L.(Eng.), or P.L.(Geo.)
  • Have a minimum of 10 years of industry experience
  • Have experience interpreting legislation – as it applies to municipal permits or appeals in other courts, or through involvement with APEGA and the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act
  • Have experience reading and understanding legal decisions
  • Have experience participating in legal or quasi-legal proceedings, whether through APEGA, other regulators, or Alberta Courts

Calgary – Graduating Students’ Workshop Volunteer

APEGA Members are encouraged to volunteer for the Calgary Graduating Students' Workshop held in conjunction with the Iron Ring and the Earth Ring ceremonies. This event is to be held at the University of Calgary on March 10, 2018. 

Attendees to this event will include new graduates in engineering and geoscience from the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University, and professionals that are attending as volunteer facilitators.

Responsibilities 

  • Help to facilitate a small group in evaluating case studies on registration, compliance, ethics and investigative issues intended to demonstrate the importance of ethical considerations in the practice of the professions.
  • Present a positive message in a professional manner

Calgary & Edmonton – Requirements for Registration Seminar Presenters

Presenters are needed to deliver in-person Requirements for Registration seminars on behalf of the APEGA Outreach department to inform Internationally Trained Applicants (ITA) and other interested parties about APEGA's registration process.  

Volunteers must present at least twice between July and June, in Edmonton or Calgary. 

Qualifications

  • Superior presentation skills 
  • Comfortable presenting to large audiences
  • Licensed as a P.Geo., P.Geol., P.Geoph., or P.Eng. in good standing with APEGA
  • Pride in the professions of geoscience and engineering
  • Experience delivering presentations is considered an asset

Edmonton Branch Executive Committee Member

Committee members are needed to run for election for the 2018-2019 Edmonton Branch Executive Committee. 

The APEGA Branches are an important and integral part of APEGA operations. With ten Branches across the province, the Branches function as the conduit between APEGA Head Office and APEGA Members.

Edmonton – Elementary Science Nights Volunteers

The APEGA Edmonton Branch is looking for enthusiastic volunteers interested in sharing their passion for engineering and geoscience with students at Elementary Science Nights in Edmonton. These events will run throughout the school year so you can choose the volunteer commitment most suitable for you. This is a great opportunity to foster a love for engineering and geoscience in students, promote your profession in the community, and log Professional Development Hours with APEGA.

Responsibilities

  • Review all materials before the event day. Clarify any questions with your Branch Outreach Lead or designated Event Manager
  • Arrive prior to the event start time and assist with general set-up at the host school.
  • Set up your assigned activity/demo station, which will have been developed, shared, and prepared ahead of time.
  • Ensure all volunteers and participants are engaging in the activities/demos in a safe manner, and are wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment as deemed necessary.
  • Assist students/parents/teachers with the activity, talk about the science behind it, and explain what is happening and why.
  • Assist with cleaning and packing up at the conclusion of the event.

Edmonton – Special Events Photographers

APEGA is looking for volunteers to act as photographers for different special events (Professional Member Induction Ceremony, Member Recognition, and other events as required) in Edmonton. Volunteers will share their knack for photography and take pictures of the ceremony, recipients, and venue with an APEGA-owned DSLR camera, under the direction of the APEGA Event Coordinator.

Interested volunteers will be required to take part in an interview with portfolio, and to sign a waiver granting APEGA ownership of the photos taken while acting as a volunteer photographer.

Edmonton - APEGA Science Olympics Challenge Manager Volunteers

APEGA is looking for enthusiastic volunteers interested in sharing their passion for engineering and geoscience with students at the APEGA Science Olympics in Edmonton. This position requires applicants to manage a small team of volunteers to facilitate hands-on student activities at the APEGA Science Olympics. Each Challenge Manager will help oversee one student challenge at the competition. 

Volunteers must be able to attend two training sessions in the weeks prior to the event, and attend their local Science Olympics Event, taking place on February 24, 2018 in Edmonton.This is a great opportunity to foster a love for engineering and geoscience in students, promote your profession in the community, and log Professional Development Hours with APEGA.

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Practising or retired Professional Member, E.I.T., G.I.T., university student member or applicant, in engineering or geoscience. Teachers and educators will be considered.
  • Pride in the professions of engineering and geoscience. Willingness to share knowledge and experience with young people.
  • Interest in promoting engineering, geoscience, technology, and related careers to students in K-12.

Edmonton & Calgary - University Student Rapid Resume Review Volunteers

APEGA Members and HR professionals are invited to use your valuable knowledge and experience at a number of fun and worthwhile university student events, aimed at helping students prepare for their entry into the industry.

Professional Engineers, Professional Geoscientists, and Human Resource representatives are invited to participate in a "speed-dating" format event where they will review and critique resumes for students. This will allow students the opportunity to gain valuable feedback to help them create a resume to start them on their professional path.

This event is designed to give students instant feedback on the content of their resumes. Professional volunteers are given just a few minutes per round to look over a student’s resume and provide insightful information to help each student create an outstanding resume.

APEGA is seeking panel members who are subject matter experts on the topic of outsourcing professional work. The Panel will undertake activities that enhance APEGA Members' awareness of outsourcing issues of a professional nature through combining two existing practice guidelines into a single Professional Practice Standard for Outsourcing of Professional Work.

  • Set up your assigned activity/demo station, which will have been developed, shared, and prepared ahead of time.
  • Ensure all volunteers and participants are engaging in the activities/demos in a safe manner, and are wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment as deemed necessary.
  • Assist students/parents/teachers with the activity, talk about the science behind it, and explain what is happening and why.
  • Assist with cleaning and packing up at the conclusion of the event.

The Wetlands Science and Engineering Working Group consists of Geoscience and Engineering APEGA Members whose scope of practice is subject to the Provincial Wetlands Policy.

Qualifications

  • Licensed as a P.Eng., P.Geo., P.Geol., or P.Geoph.
  • Background and current practice in an environmentally related aspect of Engineering or Geoscience
  • Recognized as a practitioner of Environmental Geoscience or Engineering 
  • Design projects related to Environmental Geoscience or Engineering

Volunteer with the Alberta Science Network in our Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom program. We provide you with support and training to help you create your own interactive, science curriculum topic presentation. Our Program Coordinators manage more than 1,500 teacher requests annually from across the province.

Edmonton – Innovate Program

Edmonton Public School Board's Innovate Program is seeking Professional Engineers and Professional Geoscientists to mentor students in developing lines of inquiry and analysis for various sustainable energy solutions.

These opportunities are not planned or executed by APEGA. However, due to the incredibly high educational value for these students, APEGA is supporting this initiative by facilitating volunteer recruitment. 

Project Mentor

Volunteers will share their knowledge, serve as positive role models, and aid in research and prototype development in the following areas of exploration: 

  • Designing and Building Green Walls 
    • Used for aesthetics and air quality monitoring 
    • Used to grow food 
  •  Virgin Earth Challenge
    • Researching methane-fueled bacteria as a means to reduce greenhouse gases
  • Electromagnetic Levitation
    • Demonstrating an understanding of electrical and magnetic principles by designing a functioning electromagnetic levetation device.

Career Fair Exhibitor

Edmonton Public Schools are seeking volunteer exhibitors (individuals or companies) to lead hands-on, engaging stations at STEM career fairs in March and April. Volunteers will be representatives of their respective fields of study, and not acting on behalf of APEGA.

  • March 15, 2018: Horticultural Career Fair
    • Seeking individuals or companies who are experienced in, or passionate about, technological advances in agriculture.
    • Exhibitors must be able to provide hands-on activities or challenges for high school students to engage with
  • April 19, 2018: STEM Career Fair
    • Held at Queen Elizabeth High School, Edmonton Public Schools is seeking individuals or companies who are able to bring hands-on activities to demonstrate the exciting possibilities that a career in engineering or geoscience can offer.

Fort McMurray – Language Training Program for Apprentices (LTPA) Mentorship

The Language Training Program for Apprentices (LTPA) has several individuals who have immigrated from all over the world and who want to pursue a career in the trades. Mentors are needed for this program from a variety of trades including engineers, welders, electricians, and carpenters.

This program is not a part of the APEGA Mentor Program.

Qualifications

Mentors must:

  • Have 3-5 years experience in trades work, including:
    • Automotive
    • Plumbing or pipefitting
    • Electrical
    • Heavy equipment
    • Sheet metal
  • Belong to a professional network or professional association
  • Be encouraging, supportive, flexible, and empowering with mentees
